SONGWON presents its sustainability-driven progress at K 2025

Publishing date: 01.10.2025

At K 2025, Songwon Industrial Co., Ltd., one of the world’s largest manufacturers of polymer stabilizers and a leading global player in specialty chemicals, will be highlighting its focus on sustainability as an integral part of its long-term strategy and showcasing a range of solutions that contribute to a greener, more sustainable world.

Applying a sustainability-driven approach, SONGWON integrates innovation with life cycle management to develop solutions designed to reduce environmental impact from sourcing and production through end-of-life. The company’s comprehensive portfolio is continuously enhanced to meet growing market demands for eco-friendly technologies.

Awarded its first Platinum EcoVadis medal last year, in recognition of outstanding sustainability performance, SONGWON scored 85 out of 100, placing it in the top 1% of 73,000 companies evaluated worldwide. This milestone follows five EcoVadis Gold ratings and highlights the ongoing progress in strengthening sustainability practices throughout the organization.

SONGWON has an ambitious net-zero roadmap to support its long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, with a clear focus on Scope 1 and 2 emissions reductions. The company’s dedicated sustainability team also developed a robust ESG roadmap to follow the SASB non-financial reporting standard and achieve full alignment by 2027. Together, these roadmaps provide a structured approach that supports SONGWON’s broader sustainability strategy and contributes to strengthening transparency and accountability across its global operations.

Protecting our world’s natural environment has always been a key objective for SONGWON and is embedded in the way it manages natural resources responsibly, including renewable and raw materials, through sustainable procurement and production practices. Reducing energy and water consumption while minimizing emissions, waste and effluents also lies at the core of SONGWON’s approach. Demonstrating this in practice, SONGWON is replacing conventional steam at its Ulsan plant in South Korea with externally supplied steam that produces zero GHG emissions. This marks a tangible step toward significantly reducing the company’s carbon footprint, with projected annual savings of 25,900 tCO₂-eq by 2027.

SONGWON supports the circular economy with comprehensive 5R initiatives that are delivering measurable results across its operations. At SONGWON’s Panoli plant in India, 63% of energy is now sourced from renewables. For packaging materials at its plants in Korea, the company uses 20 kg bags containing up to 50% recycled PE. In addition, Zero Liquid Discharge at the Indian plant has reduced water use by 9,798 m3. At the Ulsan plant in Korea, process-waste reuse has lowered hazardous waste by 15% and cooling-water recovery has led to a decline in total site water withdrawal by 0.4%.

In addition to this, SONGWON applies a “pragmatic” approach to recycling challenges that improves the quality and durability of polyolefins and enables products to be reused or recycled more effectively while retaining their properties. Mechanical recycling is further supported by re-stabilization using SONGNOX® binary blends, which allow recycled resins to gain a second service life. At the same time, SONGWON is advancing its transition to renewable resources by incorporating sustainable raw materials wherever possible and continuously refining processes to reduce the reliance on non-renewables.

SONGWON has always recognized the value of collective action and collaborates with other industry players in key associations, including the Polyolefins Circular Economy Platform (PCEP), to foster a cleaner, more sustainable plastics industry. By improving the recyclability of polyolefin packaging, increasing the use of recycled materials and promoting best practices across product life cycles, SONGWON is helping to shape responsible production standards. Its participation in initiatives such as the Antwerp Declaration further highlights the company’s commitment to innovation, collaboration and reducing environmental impact on a global scale.

“Guided by our strategic roadmaps, we continue to enhance sustainability across SONGWON’s global operations. By leveraging our additive and specialty chemistry expertise, we develop products that extend product life and the value of materials to support our customers’ sustainability goals,” says Thomas Schmutz, Leader Technology, Regulatory Affairs & Sustainability at SONGWON. “There is still much to be done, but through continuous improvement, we have already aligned our efforts with 15 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and are steadily moving closer to achieving all 17 as we strive to make a meaningful contribution to our world by building a more sustainable future.”
